MN VOLLEYBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION ALL STAR MATCH, St. Cloud State, 7.28.2010

RED 3, BLUE 2
(25-23, 23-25, 25-13, 21-25, 15-13)

The Red edged out the Blue in five sets in the 23rd annual MVCA All Star Game at St. Cloud State. The Reds took all the odd sets, while the Blues prevailed in the evens. Three of the sets were decided by two points. Red setter Molly Kreklow (Delano) was the Lindy Fogelberg MVP award winner.

In the first set Blue led 16-14 after a three point run capped by

an ace by Ellen Degler. On her next serve however she missed into the net and the Reds tacked on four more points to push ahead 19-16. The blocking & hitting of Holly Hafemeyer contributed three of those five points. Blue inched back to 22-21, but five straight side outs ended the first set. Jordan Hansen finished in for the Reds with a kill from the left side.

It appeared that the Reds were in control after a four point run put them up 9-7. The Reds took advantage of five Blue errors (two net calls) in their first 9 points. Blue cleaned up their game and used a 7-2 run to go in front 17-15. Red had one last surge to take a 19-18 lead. A four point run punctuated with a Red time out gave the Blues a 22-19 lead. The Reds tied the action up at 23 on a tip by Hafemeyer. Kayla Wallerich and Natalie Walseth tied the contest up with a kill and a block.

The third game proved to be the easiest win of all five sets. Red put their stamp on this game with a three point run with Kate Lange at the service line (5-2). Blue needed a time out at 12-7, the earliest of any game. It didn't turn the tide, but they did stop the run. The Reds finished off the third set with seven straight points with Kaley Melville getting three kills in that run.

Set four was a back and  fourth affair. The game was tied seven times, the last coming at 15 all. A Red missed serve opened the door for a four point Blue run (19-15). That prompted a Red time out, which in turned provoked a missed serve. Red did slice the margin to 21-19 after a slide by Hafemeyer. The Blues scored the next two points on a Maggie Lindow kill and a block Wallerich & Ellen Senf which forced another Red time out (23-19) . Both teams traded side outs the rest of the game.

Red won the toss for the firth game and elected to serve. Kreklow however put the ball in the net on her serve. Blue used that to start off 5-2 with three Red gifts. The Reds didn't get their first lead until 9-8 after a Blue bug-a-boo all night----a net violation. Red went up 12-10 after a Lange kill and a Blue hitting error. That got a Blue time out. They used that time out to regroup and tied the contest at 13. The match eneded on two Hafemeyer kills, one a slide.
