Host #9AAA Apple Valley swept Edina with a margin of 23 points. It took a while in the first set for AV to get their motor started, but once they did they put the vehicle into overdrive. The Eagles had 14 aces, one point less than the entire Edina earned point total. AV controlled their mistakes as the Hornets had one more error. With the win AV moves into the semifinals tomorrow at 10:45 am. The AV middles Melissa Racz and Aly Johnson combined for 13 points in the win.
Edina started off the evening with four straight first ball side outs and as a result built up a healthy 8-3 lead. Five of their 15 earned points came in that sequence. A missed serve turned the momentum over to the hosts. The Eagles proceeded to get four straight servers going on runs as they had a 14-4 run. At some point in this sequence the scoreboard operator became confused because each team had one point less than what I had on my notes. Another Eagle run of four put them on the verge in my book, but on the scoreboard they were two points away. AV had to use a time out after a Hornet run of 3. The AV time out worked out according to plan and they got the ball back. Each team sided out after that with AV on top 26-21.
AV had runs of 3 or more four times of the five times they got to the service line. Edina burned their first time out at 8-1, but the real heat was about to come. If a 9-3 advantage wasn't big enough, AV went on a 16-1 tear highlighted by Katherine Running coming in off the bench and serving up four aces. AV led 24-4, but Edina held off match point three times before succoming via their own missed serve.
